I work in the field of mixed media sculpture, assemblage and installation. I often use repetition as a means of reinforcing an idea or as a way of highlighting subtle comparisons between forms and objects. The work usually starts with the found object – things which are collected for their mystery and potential to begin a narrative. Items often sit on the wall or on a shelf in my studio for long periods where I place one thing alongside another until I see a dialogue developing, a possible relationship which eventually leads to a story.
In recent years, I have included paintings as well as collage in to these assemblages because I wanted to have my own “hand” more directly in these works and to add another dimension to these structures, both physically and in a more personal sense. I am interested in the playful use of strange objects, in giving new life to them and in imbuing them with a sense of mystery and intrigue.
In addition, I like my work to pose questions rather than provide easy answers and to give the viewer a sense of discovery, recognition and wonder – the same emotions I feel when I am out hunting for new material and come across something which excites me.
I am interested in the idea of seeing an object through or behind another, the way we see the world, as a series of frames, glimpses and reflected thoughts.
